"The Grey Funnel Line" is what British Navy Sailors call the service in which they are employed. A "Funnel" is the nautical term for a smokestack on a ship. Funnels of various passenger ships are many different colors, with symbols or logos unique to each line. A Navy ship's funnel is simply - grey.
